Surface water drainage of heavy-vehicle service yard

England, United Kingdom

Shortly after completion of an external car park at a commercial site in England, surface water ponding was observed on newly laid pavements. Remedial works to restore drainage performance followed, leading to a dispute between the employer and the civil engineer over paving levels and drainage performance.

I was engaged to assess if the drainage design was compliant with current guidance and met the appropriate standard of skill and care and to comment on the remedial measures taken. This work included reviewing post‑construction records, comparing as‑installed level data against the design intent and analysing causation and responsibility.

My findings were provided to the employer’s solicitors to inform their client’s legal position and next steps.
