Adequacy of design and remedial works in reinforced concrete buildings of major mixed-use development

England, United Kingdom

A major mixed‑use development of several multi‑storey reinforced‑concrete buildings valued at over £100 million faced delay and disruption after alleged structural design and detailing deficiencies were identified, prompting suspension of works and involvement of an interim designer. This led to a dispute between the contractor and the structural engineer.

I was engaged to investigate the adequacy of design, workmanship, and evaluate the reasonableness and proportionality of proposed repairs. Issues included lateral stability, punching shear and flexural capacity of flat slabs, design and detailing of columns, deflecting balconies, movement joints, and the design of foundations.

The findings of this investigation were reported to the solicitors acting for the structural engineer, to inform their client’s position and assist in responding to the contractor’s claims.
